Brazilian mezzo-soprano Josy Santos’s 2025/26 season brings highlights, including the title role in Carmen at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (Antwerp and Bruges), La Tragédie de Carmen at Luzerner Theater, Idamante in Idomeneo at the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, La Baronne de Champigny in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at Liège Opéra, a recital tour with her program Two Worlds in Songs at Casino Zug Theatre, and the Christmas Gala Concerts in Bern, Lucerne, and Zürich.
Among Josy’s recent and upcoming engagements are Witness/Singer/Woman in George Benjamin’s Lessons in Love and Violence at the Zurich Opera House, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus at Semperoper Dresden, Idamante in Idomeneo at Theater Luzern, and Dorabella in Così fan tutte at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. She also performed Angelina in La Cenerentola at the Royal Danish Opera, Adalgisa in Norma at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, and Concepción in Ravel’s L’Heure espagnole at Stadttheater Solothurn and Biel. Her concert repertoire includes J.S. Bach’s Johannes Passion BWV 245, G.F. Händel’s Dixit Dominus, and A. Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, performed with the Berner Kammerchor in Bern. She has also sung Mozart’s Requiem with the Philharmonie Baden-Baden at the Tonhalle in Zürich, Verdi’s Requiem with the Orchestra Italiana at the KKL Luzern, and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony under the baton of Martin Künstner, Carmen with the SWR Orchestra Stuttgart, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi with the Mozarteum Brasileiro Orchestra, Ottavia in L'incoronazione di Poppea, Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and La Marchesa Melibea in Il viaggio a Reims at Staatsoper Hannover. She has also appeared as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Siebel in Faust, and Oberto in Alcina at Staatsoper Stuttgart, as well as Bernardo Cenci in Ginastera’s Beatrice Cenci at the Opéra National du Rhin, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro at Oper Frankfurt.
For her acclaimed recital work in Brazil, especially her program Two Worlds in Songs with pianist Markus Hadull Josy received both the Premio Concerto 2024 and the Premio APCA 2024 for Best Performer. Based in Switzerland, Josy Santos studied in São Paulo at Cruzeiro do Sul University and later at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. (HfMDK).
